Kotor to Skadar Lake: The Scenic Route Over Lovćen
Skadar Lake is 90 minutes from Kotor, and the drive itself is half the reason to go — the old serpentine road over Lovćen is one of Europe's great mountain roads.
Two routes, two different days
The fast route runs Budva–Sozina tunnel–Virpazar in about 90 minutes. The scenic route climbs the 25 hairpins above Kotor, crosses Lovćen, passes Cetinje and drops to Rijeka Crnojevića — closer to two and a half hours, and worth every minute if you start early.
Making a day of it
Leave Kotor at 07:00, drive the serpentine in the cool of the morning, stop at the Kotor viewpoints, visit Njegoš's mausoleum on Lovćen, then reach the lake by 10:30 for a midday-avoiding boat. Return via the tunnel to skip the evening queue on the switchbacks.
Or stay the night
Given the distance, one night at the lake turns a rushed day into a proper trip: sunset on the water, dinner in Virpazar and a dawn boat before driving back. Lake accommodation is roughly half of Kotor's prices.
