Montenegro Road Trip: A 7-Day Itinerary With Skadar Lake at Its Centre
Most Montenegro itineraries treat Skadar Lake as a two-hour stop between Budva and Podgorica. That is backwards. The lake is the best base in the country: an hour from the coast, forty minutes from the airport, and quiet at night.
The seven days
Day 1: arrive Podgorica or Tivat, drive to Virpazar (40–90 min), evening on the lake. Day 2: full morning boat tour, afternoon at Besac Fortress and a Crmnica wine cellar. Day 3: Rijeka Crnojevića and the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, then Cetinje. Day 4: Lovćen and the old road down to Kotor. Day 5: Kotor bay, Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks. Day 6: Budva old town in the morning, Sveti Stefan viewpoint, back to the lake for the evening. Day 7: Ostrog or the southern beaches near Ulcinj, depending on your flight.
Total driving is modest — nothing on this route exceeds 90 minutes — but Montenegrin roads are slower than the map suggests. Add 30% to every estimate in July and August.
Where to base yourself
Two bases beat five. Use the lake for four nights and Kotor bay for three, or stay on the lake the whole week and treat the coast as day trips. Accommodation near Virpazar is roughly half the price of the coast, and an apartment near Skadar Lake with parking removes the coastal town's biggest daily headache.
